History
Founded in 1666
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Hartford County was created on May 10, 1666, by the Colony of Connecticut as one of four original counties. The county was named after Hertfordshire and expanded through acquisitions from non-county areas and neighboring counties, including gaining Simsbury in 1670 and Litchfield in 1722, while losing territory to the creation of Windham County in 1726.
