History
Founded in 1873
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Renville County was originally created from Dakota Territory in 1887, gaining territory from Wynn County while losing territory to Ward County. After North Dakota became a state in 1889, Renville County was eliminated in 1892 when its territory was divided between Bottineau and Ward counties. Renville County was re-created from Ward County in 1910 following voter approval and a North Dakota Supreme Court ruling that upheld the election results.
