History

Founded in 1883

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

McLean County was formed from territory in Burleigh and Stevens counties on April 6, 1885. When North Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889, McLean became a county in the new state. In 1892, the county gained territory from Church, Garfield, Stevens, and Sheridan counties, eliminating those four counties. On November 3, 1908, McLean lost territory to the re-creation of Sheridan County.
