An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cumberland County was created from Salem County on January 19, 1748, and was named after Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. Over the following century and a half, the county's boundaries shifted several times through transfers with Salem County, Cape May County, and Gloucester County.
