History
Founded in 1643
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Essex County was created on May 10, 1643 as one of four original counties in Massachusetts. The county expanded through the 17th and 19th centuries as towns changed county borders, including gaining Amesbury, Haverhill, and Salisbury from Norfolk in 1679 when New Hampshire became a separate royal colony.
