Founded in 1903

Kalawao County was created by the Territory of Hawaii from a portion of Molokai known as Kalaupapa, Kalawao, and Waikolu, which was designated as a settlement for people with leprosy. The county was placed under the direct jurisdiction of the Board of Health, with limited county officers.
